I never planned to fall in love with medicine—until one night in the ICU changed everything...

Growing up, I was surrounded by medicine. Not in the way you might think—my parents never pressured me or my brother to follow in their footsteps. Instead, they simply lived their lives with such passion and dedication to their work that it was impossible not to be inspired. Medicine wasn’t just their career; it was a way of life. And slowly, without even realizing it, I fell in love with it too.

One of my earliest memories of this was when I was younger. In the middle of the night, my dad was on call, and my mom had no one to watch me, so she took me with her to the hospital. I remember peeking through the window as she pulled critical patients from helicopters down to the hyperbaric chamber, 100 feet below sea level, for hyperbaric oxygen therapy. In the ICU, I saw people on the verge of taking their last breath—but my mom and her colleagues saved them. She showed me medicine and emergency care at its most intense. As she once told me, “Medicine isn’t just about saving lives; it’s about lengthening the joy of not only the patient’s life but also the lives of their loved ones.” Those moments showed me that medicine is more than treating illnesses; it’s about giving people more time, more memories and more hope.

My parents didn’t just talk about medicine; they let me experience it firsthand. By shadowing their coworkers or sitting in their offices during late-night work sessions, I saw the realities of their jobs up close. They often shared stories with my brother and me about challenging cases, difficult decisions and even heartbreaking losses. These experiences didn’t intimidate me; they ignited my curiosity. I started to view medicine not just as a profession but as a way to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.

But it wasn’t just their work that shaped me; it was their values. They taught me resilience, the importance of hard work and the power of compassion. They showed me medicine is about more than treating illnesses—it’s about understanding people, listening to their stories and caring for them with empathy and respect.

So, why did I start White Coat Wonders? The idea had been simmering in the back of my mind for a while. I’ve always loved writing, and for a long time I wanted to find a way to combine my passion for medicine with my love for storytelling. But I doubted myself. Could I really create something that would inspire others? It wasn’t until my mom encouraged me to go for it that I finally took the leap.

That's how White Coat Wonders came to life. It's not just a blog; it’s a space where students can explore the world of medicine in a way that’s both informative and inspiring. Through interviews with doctors and medical students, you’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at their journeys: the challenges they’ve faced, the lessons they’ve learned, and the advice they wish they’d had. You'll also find research-based articles tackling everything from medical ethics and healthcare disparities to the latest breakthroughs in the field. At the same time, personal reflections will offer a relatable perspective on navigating the path to medicine.

What sets White Coat Wonders apart is its focus on storytelling. Medicine isn’t just about facts and figures; it’s about the people behind the white coats—their triumphs, struggles and the moments that define their careers. My goal is to plant a seed of passion for medicine in others, helping students see it not just as a career but as a calling. I’m so excited to share this journey with you. Whether you’re a student exploring your options, a healthcare professional looking to share your story or simply someone curious about the world of medicine, I hope you’ll join me. Let’s explore the wonders of medicine together—one story, one interview and one blog post at a time.
